What is an antifungal dog shampoo?
Occasionally your dog may suffer some kind of irritation or skin disorder that may require specific attention. Antifungal dog shampoos are products that have been designed to specifically target and heal the irritation. These irritations can come in many forms such as dermatitis, ringworm and a host of others – but usually creates a similar effect on your dog, an irritation.
How to spot a fungal infection
Irritations are usually visible (changes in skin color or patchy fur around an area) although excessive scratching, changes in behavior and mood or occasionally an odor may also indicate an infection within the skin. A veterinarian should always be consulted if there is a suspected infection.
Common types of fungal infection
Yeast infection – This is an infection caused by an imbalance in your dog’s yeast levels. This can be brought on by antibiotics or an allergy. It is commonly found in the ears or paws of your pet and they will constantly lick and scratch the area. Topical creams can generally heal the infection however a consultation with your vet will help get a better action plan to treating this infection. Diet changes or prescribed medicated anti fungal shampoos can also be effective means of treatment.
Ringworm – This is not in fact a worm, but instead is actually a fungus. It derives its name from the ring shaped patches that can form anywhere on the dog. They are commonly found on the face, paws and ears. Puppies are most susceptible to ringworm and it is highly infectious. Your dog contracts ringworm through contact with an area that has infectious fungal spores (carpet, soil, and bedding) or with contact with another infected victim (dog, cat, human). It is generically treated with an antifungal dog shampoo designed for ringworm and you should seek advice from your vet if you suspect your poor dog is suffering from ringworm.
Why fungal infections should not be left untreated
Fungal infections are itchy and painful for your dog. Although they can often resolve themselves without treatment, this can take months and your pooch deserves to be treated as quickly as possible to avoid unnecessary pain. Treatments are inexpensive and effective once correctly diagnosed.
