As kettlebells with adjustable weight are becoming more and more popular it becomes harder and more time consuming to choose the right bell for your-self.
What is a kettlebell?
Kettlebells where firstly used in ancient Russia back in 1704 and the word kettlebell comes from the Russian word girya, meaning a cast iron ball with a handle.
Design and shape of kettlebell is different from the design of widely known dumbbell and barbell. The weight of kettlebell, unlike dumbbell and barbell is not distributed evenly, so kettlebell workouts differ from those with dumbbell, since there is a need to stabilize the weight of your body.
Bells can come in different weights but they typically range from 18lbs (8kg) to 106lbs (48kg). As you can see from the chart above, kettlebells are suitable for men and women but the weight of your bell will depend on your current fitness level and training experience.
As we mentioned before, adjustable kettlebells have numerous advantages, and when doing workout with bells you combine anaerobic and cardio workout into one session that means that you will get best effects of both types and it will save you a lot of time because you are doing it simultaneously.
It doesn’t matter if you are male or female, with adjustable weight kettlebell workout you will get in shape quickly, gain muscles or lose weight fast, depending on your goals and needs.
Using kettlebells can be a lot of fun and it seems that more men and women are using it in their workout sessions.
Which factors are important when buying a kettlebell?
Selecting good kettlebell depends on your current experience and the lift you want when you exercise. But there are also some other factors when choosing one:
1. Load (Weight)
If you are a man with no training experience or if you are not very active, our suggestions are starting out with 12-16 kg kettlebell. If you are a woman with same background you should consider kettlebells with 8-12 kg for the start.
2. Handle Style
The handle is essential part of kettlebell because you’ll be in contact with this part most of the time when using kettlebell for workout. You want the handle that almost floats in your hand and good handle should have:
- Right texture, not too smooth (slippery) but also not too rough (tearing your hands)
- Right size and thickness
- The right amount of the space between the handle and bell
3. Handle Thickness
Handle thickness of most kettlebells corresponds with international standard which is cca. 35 millimeters, but there are some kettlebells with very thin handles and the ones with very thick handle, so you should watch for that when buying kettlebell.
4. Handle Surface
Surface of the handle can vary from brand to brand, but most of them come with painted or powder-coated handle. Make sure your handle is not too smooth because it’s harder to grip the kettlebell during intense workout when you become sweat. If you are serious about kettlebell lifting we recommend smooth steel-polished handle, because when you become really sweat they will be easier to manipulate with.
When it comes to durability nothing beats kettlebells as they can last for a lifetime. Steel kettlebells are strongest and they can last the longest. Cast-iron kettlebells are not like steel bells but they are really strong and can last long. Plastic versions can last few years but we wouldn’t recommend them because if you drop them frequently they won’t be fully functional.
Warranty usually depends on the type of kettlebell and brand. There are some brands that offer 90 days warranty but also some that guarantee 1 – 2 years warranty. Be sure to check that out when deciding which kettlebell to buy.
