When you’re planning on buying a fingertip pulse oximeter, prepare to be met with a plethora of product options. However, no matter which brand or model you end up choosing, the device will assuredly still perform the same basic functions.
If you’re on the go and you don’t have a whole lot of time, these devices are perfect for you. Amazingly, these puppies can return your pulse rate data in a matter of seconds. It seems like just a few years ago, those kind of results and in that kind of time simply couldn’t even be fathomed. It’s as if, overnight, these products just appeared in our hospitals, ambulances, and nursing homes.
Now, the convenience of these machines can be had in your own home. No longer do you have to wait on a doctor to tell you what your blood oxygen saturation reading is, or your pulse rate. Just strap one of these on your finger (or, gently clamp, as we like to say), and in a few seconds, you would have just saved yourself a trip to the doctor.
That is, unless you have a serious condition—in which case, a fingertip pulse oximeter would be perfect for monitoring your current state. Many patients with heart conditions, rather minor or serious, like having the handiness of one of these devices in their home. In fact, on numerous occasions, lives have been saved by using one of these products (and no, not any particular brand will be mentioned here… all of them, unless we say otherwise, will perform about the same).
It’s up to you which brand you choose. If you’re a visual person, you’ll be happy to know there are a number of these tiny machines out there that come with more than one display. As an example, the Facelake Fingertip Finger Pulse Oximeter comes with both a SPO2 and a PR display, a PR waveform display, as well as a bargraph display.
Don’t worry about having to search far and wide for a device that works longer than the others, because truthfully, most of these products have about a 30 hour battery life. Anything longer than that, either make sure you aren’t dealing with a shady company, or perhaps their technology has just received an upgrade. Whatever the case, 30 hours should be more than plenty for even the most avid users.
If you were to survey the interior of an ambulance right now, chances are you will find a fingertip pulse oximeter somewhere in there. You will also probably find scalpels, various medicines (including ones you have in your own home), and perhaps some other household items. If any of those things have a place in your home, then consider this one for having a place, too.

A few more details about how finger pulse oximeters work
Finger pulse oximeters typically use red infrared light to detect oxygen in a person’s blood stream. The reason for this is because infrared light will be absorbed more by hemoglobin which of course carries the oxygen. Red light however will be able to pass through it, so you see the process is relatively simple to use. After a few times using is you’ll have a good idea of what to expect as well as any other type of problems that may come up. It is also worth noting that this process works in reverse as well. Red light will be absorbed more by hemoglobin without much oxygen, but infrared light will be allowed to pass through.
Finger pulse oximeters seem easy to use, but what happens after the initial process is done? Once all of the information is gathered and transmitted to the device, then the ratios of the red to infrared light are calculated and compared to a model table to determine results. Though I cannot speak with absolute certainty I can say that a good reading is typically between 90 to 100 saturation. If you get more this is not a good thing, you should check with a medical professional. It is also advised when using finger pulse oximeters to make sure your blood flow is good and your movements are good. Poor blood flow and poor movement can all have a bad effect on your readings.
